Members of the military are exposed to a wide variety of loud noises in the course of training and combat, and they rely on the equipment provided to them to protect their hearing. If this equipment is faulty, it can lead to hearing loss and other problems. Sadly, that is exactly what has happened to many veterans and other servicemembers. Combat Arms™ ear plugs manufactured by 3M, which were supplied to the United States military between 2003 and 2012, have been found to be defective, and a large number of military personnel have suffered injuries as a result.

Due to design and manufacturing defects, the Combat Arms ear plugs provided to members of the military were too short to fit properly into some users' ears, and they would often loosen during use, rendering them ineffective. If you served in the armed forces during this period, it is likely that you have used these defective earbuds. If you have suffered hearing loss while serving your country, you should contact our Chicago personal injury attorneys to determine your options for pursuing compensation for your injuries.

Defective Ear Plugs Failed to Protect Veterans

3M Allegedly Knew About Product Defects

In July 2018, 3M agreed to pay a $9.1 million settlement to the Department of Justice to resolve a lawsuit over defective Combat Arms ear plugs. It has been alleged that 3M not only provided these defective products to the military, but it knew about these defects as early as 2000 and failed to disclose this information. The company also failed to provide information about methods of ear plug insertion that could provide the correct protection, and soldiers were never informed of the techniques that could help prevent hearing damage.

CAEv2 Ear Plugs

The Combat Arms™ Earplugs, Version 2 (CAEv2) are double-ended ear plugs that provide two options for hearing protection. One option provides full sound blockage, as with traditional earplugs, while the other allows for significant reduction of loud noises, such as explosions or gunfire, while allowing a user to hear quieter sounds such as communication with other soldiers. Defects in the CAEv2 earplugs have resulted in an improper fit in some users' ears, causing them to loosen and allow dangerous sounds to enter the ear canal. The failure to protect against loud noises has resulted in hearing loss for users, and it has also led to conditions such as tinnitus.
