Lawyers Representing Victims of Toxic Chemical Exposure

For the past 20 years, the attorneys at Tomasik Kotin Kasserman have been representing victims of chemical exposure. Most recently, TKK began investigating Sterigenics International, a sterilization facility located in Willowbrook, Illinois. Since 1984, the company has sterilized medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and food products with ethylene oxide (“EtO”), a colorless, odorless, carcinogenic gas. Willowbrook’s residents have inhaled EtO emissions for nearly three and a half decades, unbeknown to almost 20,000 people.

Even more troubling is the fact that Sterigenics had reason to know of the hazards of EtO, including its toxicity, carcinogenicity, and mutagenicity. Sadly, Sterigenics’ emissions have exposed Willowbrook residents to chronic inhalation of EtO, which can cause cancer, miscarriages, infertility, birth defects, damage to the brain and nervous system, neurological disorders, bronchitis, pulmonary edema, and emphysema.

In 2016, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Integrated Risk Information System found a 30% increase in EtO’s “adult-based inhalation [cancer] risk.” On August 21, 2018, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry released a response to health risks related to Sterigenics’ chemical release of EtO in Willowbrook. The Agency determined that an elevated cancer risk exists for residents and off-site workers in the Willowbrook community surrounding Sterigenics’ plant.

Tomasik Kotin Kasserman has extensive experience working with victims who have been exposed to toxic chemicals, including a settlement for a mercury spill by Nicor Gas in Chicago and representation of people who contracted brain cancer while working at Amoco Research Center in Naperville.
