Dangerous Pressure Cookers and Blenders Exploding, Causing Disfiguring Burns

By: Jessica Black

Defective product exploding pressure cooker

Consumers across the country have been put on high alert after various household appliances have exploded, leading to severe disfiguring burns and lacerations. Manufacturers of multiple kitchen appliances such as the Power Pressure Cooker XL, NuWave, and NutriBullet have been legally exposed for manufacturing and selling defective products. The tops of the appliances have been malfunctioning and injuring users. Those in close proximity to the defective products are subjected to spinning blades, plastic debris, scalding steam, and hot contents ejected from the units.

The Power Pressure Cooker XL is marketed as an “amazing, one-button kitchen miracle” and sold at several big-box retailers such as Target, Wal-Mart, and Bed Bath & Beyond. The “as seen on TV” product disclaimer states that the lid of the pressure cooker cannot be removed until after internal pressure has dissipated and it is safe. However, Power Pressure Cooker XL explosions have injured a number of consumers, including a woman who suffered severe burns to her torso and injuries to children ranging from nine months to 14 years old.

Similarly, the NuWave pressure cooker has been advertised to consumers as a convenient and efficient cooking device. Unfortunately, this product has placed a number of consumers in danger of scalding food and liquids exploded across their kitchen, burning themselves, their family members, and other house guests in the vicinity. Among the consumers injured by this product are two women who were able to turn and open the pressure cooker’s lid while it was still cooking. The cooker’s locking safety system was defective, which allowed the scalding hot contents to explode all over the women. The hot liquids and pressure building up in these appliances have the capability to cause severe injuries and long-term health issues when the lids explode.

Consumers have experienced similar injuries after NutriBullet canisters have separated from their blade components due to heat and pressure buildup while blending. This defect has led the product to unexpectedly explode on consumers while using the blender in its normal, intended manner. One woman was severely burned as a result of her NutriBullet heating the contents of the canister during normal use of the blender. The heat being produced by the product raised the temperature and pressure to the point that the bullet canister exploded its hot contents on the woman.

All too often, common household products continue to be sold after they have caused severe injuries to innocent consumers. Companies that manufacture such products that injure and maim are being held liable. Attorneys Timothy Tomasik and Loren Legorreta are experienced in product liability litigation, obtaining just recoveries for our clients who have suffered injuries as a result of defective products.
